  1. ADDICTION ALERT🚨 Any suggestions as to what to do with the “pain” when the episode ends?! I listen to the podcast and I suppress the pain by watching the youtube version the next day to revisit the information, but “Alas”, that’s it! Pain it is until next Monday!
    Maybe that’s why my chocolate consumption has tripled recently🤔

  3. I have to say I have been a fan since I started watching you on other people's podcasts. As an ADHD coach for high-performing adults this podcast is helping people regulate and experiment with both tools, supplements, and data to deepen self-awareness, improve efficacy, and literally enjoy their lives more. I especially appreciate the time marked notes, research, and studies that help people develop an awareness of the Neuroscience behind the symptoms that have in many cases dictated their life success. Thank you for making all this happen. It's changing (more importantly improving) lives every day. My clients are learning to identify causes and mitigate Insipid, unwanted symptoms more reliably. Although knowing is not doing, with ADHD, knowing more about these brain-body connections is helping my clients move toward self-acceptance, and move away from life long shame. Instead of feeling broken, they're trying new approaches. I see their results, measured by less struggle and more presence, agency and joy. I am more grateful with each new episode.

  4. Excellent podcast as always. I do have one suggestion for the sake of accuracy if that’s what you are still going for. Perhaps you are aware and mean what you say but when you use the term “amphetamines” it’s unclear whether you are referring to methamphetamine or regular amphetamine. The fact that they are different substances with different harm potentials and safety profiles is an important reason to make the distinction between them. Another reason is that adderall is made of amphetamine. So if you say amphetamine when you are citing a source or study that used methamphetamine it can cause confusion. Apologies if I’m off base with this suggestion but with so many people taking adderall these days I think it’s important for the info on it and on drugs in general to be presented as accurately as possible.

  5. 1:10:00 The thing about "expectation dopamine" is that this too requires some kind of mental energy to conjure up – you have to imagine having the reward to make it exciting enough to want to do it. With age, and once you've been there and done that, even the novelty of novelty itself is a disappointment. I can see why people risk so much for the next rush, but they have not got to the stage where its all invariant and indifferent.

  6. So psychopaths have a hyper-reactive dopamine reward system. If we did the same as we did to those poor rats and injected a psychopath with that neurotoxin that eliminate dopamine, will that solve the problem or create another problem ?! did I just solve the world biggest tragedy that is psychopathy, and there will be an everlasting world peace or NOT EXACTLY?! lol

  8. 1:03:00 in impulsivity – sure, BUT, the object of desire has to be within proximity coincident to the impulse. (This is well know by those who design restaurants, supermarkets and so on – some research shows that people who live in houses where access through the main door is via the kitchen are 20lb heavier than similar demographic people who live in houses where the main entrance leads to a room that is not the kitchen…. all by design!!)

Dr Huberman, I am only getting started on this episode, but I was a bit disappointed that you didn't talk about stress eating and eating disorders in the last one, when you spoke about food and emotions. As someone who is using food and especially sugar to deal with stress, I'm constantly struggling to stay on the right side of fat. I like working out, but I just can't stop comfort eating. It feels like I'm stuck in this cycle of eating, cardio, dieting and stress. And this seems to be a problem for many, many people. From what I hear, it's even worse now that we are all stuck at home. I would very much appreciate understanding why this happens and what can I do to stop it. Maybe you'd consider doing an episode on that? Thank you very much for sharing your hard-won knowledge with the world, you efforts are much appreciated. Best wishes.

  11. Only thing I have a problem with is when I can't sleep during the night I have to look at my phone to get a meditation or a yoga Nidra to help me sleep. Now I don't know what to do as I don't want don't want to use my phone e between 10pm and 4am🤔

  12. This was so good and I enjoy every episode. You were talking about the effect of certain drugs on dopamine releases like food or cocaine. I am very interested to hear about sugar and the effect it has on the pleasure and reward system in the brain. Is there then such a thing as sugar addiction/food addiction/processed food addiction?

  13. 50:08 from experience you don't tell your kids about any future plans, surprise them, they will continue nagging you about it and if it got cancelled for any reason out of your control its a disaster, and the reward prediction error is huge with children or "maybe" just mine:) their imagination exceeds reality.

    circa 50:00 on "maybe"… ive always taken that to mean "no". Or, at least, "possible, but its going to have a significant cost attached which seldom makes the reward worth the effort". About sums up life actually…

Question: In the pleasure pain cycle dopamine is released and a mirror experience of pain is also had by other chemicals being released… Is it important to know what the "other chemicals" are and how to manage them? I've been trying intermittent fasting and am struggling with the cravings which I believe are due from my dependence of sweets in my diet.
